| | | | | | Spring/Summer 2025 | Issue 010 | | | | | | | | | | Last month we welcomed Hannah Dolman back as a Full Time member of staff, following the completion of her Design for Industry (DFI) degree at Northumbria University.
Hannah was with us as a placement student in 2024 before going back to University to finish her degree. We were heavily impressed with her Creativity, Enthusiasm and Work Ethic and are thrilled to offer her a position back with us. 👏 🙌
She has also just passed her driving test :)! | | | | | | We had the pleasure of visiting our Junior Designer, Hannah's, University reveal show at Northumbria University. She has just received her marks and has come out with a BA (Hons) with First Class Honours (1:1). Well done you!
We were heavily impressed with the display of creativity and skills that this years design graduates had to offer. So our congratulations extend to both the students and faculty of DFI.
Hannah designed a portable espresso maker, Sparo, crafted for coffee enthusiasts who prioritise quality, efficiency and sustainability in their daily routine wherever they are.
Hannah - "I have had a wonderful time studying Design for Industry at Northumbria University. Through the four years of hard work and dedication, I have come out a confident designer, proud of the projects I have created and already enjoying my time and developing my skills further in the design industry."
Best of luck to all students and we look forward to what you all achieve next 👏 | | | | | | We would like to introduce our new placement student, Katie! She joined the team just in time to celebrate her birthday with cake and doughnuts 🍩 🎂
She has been doing some brilliant work for our customers! Thanks for joining us Katie 🙏 | | | | Fat Scran Friday - Volume 1 | | Birthday Balloons and Bao Buns.
We wished Rebeccah Moore-Holliday a Happy Birthday with our first "Fat Scran Friday" and where better to start a new tradition than at Pablo Eggsgobao 🤗
On the last Friday of every month, the team will be trying some of the amazing food/drink on offer within the North East to celebrate both our successes as a team, as well as supporting local businesses (Suggestions welcome!) | | | | Fat Scran Friday - Volume 2. | | Friday 13/06 saw the team venture to Corbridge for our first ‘Fat Scran Friday: On Tour’ 😬
We enjoyed the beautiful weather in Corbridge at the Tynedale Beer Festival. Amazing food, beer and company! 🍻
Bhan Mi, Gyros, Gnocchi, Loaded Hashbrowns, Halloumi, Beef rib, Fish & Chips… amongst local craft beers, ales and ciders… what was not to love!
We always look forward to this every year and cant wait for 2026’s festival! 🥳
Always great seeing and catching up with our friends at PDL Group , who are one of the main sponsors 🙌 | | | | | | Our Technical Director, Peter celebrated his birthday on 14/06 and of course we had to mark the occasion with the traditional gifts of cake and whisky 🍾
Happy Birthday from all of us at E3D 🎂🥳 | | | | | | Last week marked the end of a challenging but rewarding project for E3design Ltd.
For the past 18 months, we’ve been working on reproducing 11 separate components from the original #Hornby Dublo model railway sets — parts that are now long out of production.
To say Richard Bonnet of VIKING OPTICAL LIMITED (pictured) is a model railway enthusiast is an understatement.
Some of these parts date back to the earliest days of injection moulding and had to be faithfully replicated — imperfections and all.
There were no CAD files back then and, in some cases, not even any original drawings.
We reverse-engineered the components, made prototypes for fit and function, and then moved into production using our wide and varied supplier network both in the UK and overseas.
Not only did we need to create the CAD models and drawings, but we also had to analyse the original polymers to identify modern equivalents, and colour-match everything to the original RAL codes.
One of the greatest challenges was reproducing the station clock — a special thanks to Bang On Print & Design and to Simon Davidson and his team for their invaluable help with that one.
It was with a touch of melancholy that our Technical Director, Peter Angus, handed over the final two parts for approval yesterday.
Peter and Richard have become firm friends through this project — they definitely wear the same anoraks!

Great conversation around innovation within healthcare and really encouraging to see how the North East is competing in this space 🙌
Looking forward to the next one 👏 | | Great evening yesterday at the Make UK Manufacturing Dinner at Hardwick Hall Hotel
We had the opportunity to talk all things Manufacturing, Defence and the exciting (we hope!) prospects that should hopefully come with the Governments announcements for support and stability within Manufacturing and Exports. It's a tricky time, but we hope for positive change so we can push forward with the amazing Innovations that the SME's up to the Large Corporates are capable of producing 🙌
Great panel of speakers with interesting perspectives on how we positively move forward as a region/country.
Always good to catch up with friends/colleagues old and new and we are looking forward to the next one! | | | | | | Redesigning Infuriating Objects | | | | | | Impact of Ageing on Sleep | Hannah had the pleasure of visiting #TyneDesignWeek's 'Impact of Ageing on Sleep' workshop with Northumbria University and Zeepy.
It was very insightful hearing from sleep scientists Tara Santhi & Mario Miguel, and Rob Law MBE about Zeepy's current and upcoming products. Hannah also had the pleasure of watching her own peers Morgan Linley and Hannah Thompson present their Final Major Projects surrounding the topic of sleep which highlighted the issues we face in this day and age and where we should be focusing our attention for design-led innovation.
Working together with everyone who attended to create future DFI assignments was rewarding and fantastic hearing from such different perspectives about their personal issues with sleep. | | Great talk at another #TyneDesignWeek event Northumbria University.
This one was from Rob Law MBE, the Founder of Trunki (Heroes Group), who discussed all things Brand, Consumers, Copycats, as well as his journey and all failures leading to his success. 👏
One thing our placement student, Katie Fraser, took from this which will help shape her future career once she recommences her studies on DFI in September was shown perfectly in one of Robs slides - Embrace, Focus & Adapt. 🙌 | | | | Beth, Hannah and Katie spent the evening enjoying a glass of bubbly with the community and panellists at Ladies, Wine & Design event on Day 3 of #TyneDesignWeek, hosted by Beth Hazon, Sarah Tempest and Danielle Brough. 👏
The panellists Erika Sykes, Zeynap Yavuzcezzar and Michelle Pegg provided their stories and experiences in the creative industry, including their highs, lows and even embarrassing moments... We've all been there! 😅
It was inspiring to listen to creative women and a pleasure to have honest conversations in such a friendly environment, learning that failures can later lead to success. 🙌
Again a huge thank you to the team from Edge Innovation (including Susan Ross who did a great job making sure the Wine was in good supply!), The North East Combined Authority, Northumbria University and everyone else for organising this event and opening up these networking opportunities.
We really look forward to both attending and contributing to these events in the future 👏 | | Another good event from #TyneDesignWeek at St Mary's Heritage Centre in Gateshead for Tyne Design Social with Silicon Mingle.
Fun fact - this was where Marc & Rebeccah had their wedding reception back in 2017.
The building is still as stunning as ever! 👏
Great to catch up with everyone at the event (as ever) thanks to the team at Edge Innovation for the organisation, as well as the teams from The North East Combined Authority, Northumbria University & Newcastle University for their efforts during Tyne Design Week.
I know the question was asked of 'Is there an appetite to do this (Tyne Design Week) again'... and our answer is a resounding absolutely! 🙌 | | | | Thank you to all involved for such a great week celebrating all things Design, Innovation and Creativity across our region.
We look forward to what comes next and our contribution! | | | | | | We are eager to highlight the exciting developments and innovations emerging from businesses in the North East. As always, sustainability in design is imperative in our industry. That's why we recently updated our sustainability pledge and took some time to consider why it is so important. We think that sustainability and innovation in product and industrial design are pivotal for addressing the challenges our environment faces as well as driving economic growth. We will release more on this very soon!
