Sunday 4th February 2024

Dear Members, here are some updates, news and information, and it seems to be survey time:

Parks & Open Spaces Strategy

The first survey is to have your say on a new Parks and Open Spaces Strategy for Barnet which will help the Council protect, maintain and improve our valuable parks and open spaces.

It's on the Engage Barnet website but is a bit confusing because the survey is actually in two parts:

The main survey is for the public, here's the direct link.

The second one is for organisations, so I've responded on behalf of the 'Friends of Oak Hill Park'

While you're pondering the survey, EBRA member Jane Cubbidge posted this photo of Egyptian Geese in Oak Hill Park this morning in our Friends of Oak Hill Park Facebook group.

A bit tricky to count, but I think I saw eleven there this afternoon.

The Council's parks team will use the consultation findings, along with other feedback from council officers, councillors, and other key groups to inform their draft strategy. The results of the consultation and how we they acting on the results will be published in July 2024.

NLWA Survey on Waste

The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is a statutory public authority, committed to serving over two million north London residents in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Waltham Forest.

They are undertaking a research project with the University of Derby into Londoners' engagement in environmental behaviours. To participate in the study, you will be required to fill in a short survey which will ask some questions about your demographics, then for your thoughts about nature, the environment, waste management and engagement in environmental behaviours. The survey will take approximately 7 minutes to complete.

At the end of the survey you will be given the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win a £250 Love to Shop voucher. To do so you will need to provide your email address so they can contact you should you win.

Household Support Grants

East Barnet councillor Simon Radford writes:

"Lots of carers who qualify for financial support don’t either know it exists or do not claim it. As such, would you mind circulating the below which some residents might find very useful in times of financial strain."

Small grants for Carers age 55 and over

We currently have a grants scheme that provides for small amounts of funding to support households who are struggling with day-to-day costs and unexpectedly high utility bills. The funding is limited and you have to be over 55 to apply.

Please contact us here [email mike.rich@barnetcarers.org] if you would like to apply to this fund. If you have applied before, you may still be eligible, however, we will be prioritising those who have not had a grant before.

Prince of Wales - Update

Apart from the Council's "Community Rights" team coming back to me to verify that EBRA qualifies to nominate the Prince as an ACV (Asset of Community Value) - we do of course* - there isn't much news yet.

As reported in The Barnet Post, there was a deputation to the Council to raise awareness of the POW closing:

EB councillor Phil Cohen writes:

"The ACV was not discussed and we are awaiting a date for a hearing of the application. The Leader of the council had to absent himself from the discussion on the deputation as he will be hearing the ACV application and didn’t want to prejudice himself as both sides (owners and campaigners) can be represented at the hearing. Having heard very good speeches from the deputation and us councillors the council decided to note the campaign, given we still have the ACV hearing to come. It is still very pressing to find out who the pub has been sold to, we need some clever investigators to find out."

Our MP Theresa Villiers wrote on Friday:

"I heard this morning that [a brewery] may have bought the pub with a view to keeping it open."

There are lots of rumours around, but if anyone has any verifiable news, please do let me know! Thank you.

*the evidence I was able to provide to validate EBRA is further justification for our Association having a constitution, AGMs, subscriptions, and insisting on knowing members' addresses to prove that our members are bona fide Barnet residents [as per our privacy policy, addresses are never revealed of course].

AGM Date

Advance notice that our AGM will be held on Wednesday 28th February 2024. We shall again be meeting in the new community halls attached to St Mary's Church. Meetings start promptly at 7:30pm; members are welcome to arrive from 7:15pm.

An agenda will be published in due course, please let me know if you have any items to include. Thank you.

Best regards,

Rob White
