ULEZ Advice

The ULEZ is being expanded to the Greater London boundary from 29th August, and any vehicles deemed to be polluting will have to pay £12.50 a day to drive in the area.

There is a real risk that some people may mistakenly believe their vehicle is compliant, and only find out that it isn't when they receive a penalty notice through the post.

So the advice is:

1) Check your vehicle on the TfL website
tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle (don't use any other website, always go to the official source)
If your vehicle is exempt, that's all you need to do.
If your vehicle is NOT exempt, go to step 2:

2) Can you claim exemption or discount? Check on the TfL website here
If you can claim an exemption or a 100% discount, do that ASAP.
If you CAN'T claim an exemption or discount, go to step 3:

3) Set up Auto Pay at tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/auto-pay. Again, make sure you only visit the genuine TfL website (beware of fake sites which try to scam you).
Auto Pay is very important because
- If you are detected driving your non-compliant vehicle anywhere in the ULEZ, £12.50 will be debited automatically without the risk of you forgetting to pay and therefore receiving a penalty
- If on a particular day you don't drive or the cameras don't detect you driving, you will not be charged (whereas if you pay-as-you-go, you might think you've driven in the ULEZ and pay voluntarily, but in fact may not have been detected.)

Auto Pay is free to set up, for any address (not just in London). You just need to add your vehicles, and add a card or direct debit.

If you have friends and family outside Greater London who may visit from time to time, please tell them about Auto Pay too. Even the BBC's helpful FAQ about ULEZ doesn't mention Auto Pay:

Tree-mendous!

Do you like trees or do you like maps? Now you can combine the two in Barnet Council's marvellous tree mapping database:

barnet.ezyportal.com/Trees

It currently has details of 53,569 trees in Barnet!

For example this magnificent oak next to the bowls club is valued at nearly £140,000. There's lots of other data, including things like its estimated weight (15 tons 😱) and how much CO2 it sequesters, when it was inspected or maintained, and so on. And if you need to report a tree for any reason you can give its identity code to the Council.

You can also see where the Council intend to plant new trees.

Thanks to Robin Bishop of the Barnet Society for bringing this fascinating database to my attention!
