The ULEZ is being expanded to the Greater London boundary from 29th August, and any vehicles deemed to be polluting will have to pay £12.50 a day to drive in the area.
There is a real risk that some people may mistakenly believe their vehicle is compliant, and only find out that it isn't when they receive a penalty notice through the post.
If your vehicle is exempt, that's all you need to do.
If your vehicle is NOT exempt, go to step 2:
If you can claim an exemption or a 100% discount, do that ASAP.
If you CAN'T claim an exemption or discount, go to step 3:
Auto Pay is very important because
- If you are detected driving your non-compliant vehicle anywhere in the ULEZ, £12.50 will be debited automatically without the risk of you forgetting to pay and therefore receiving a penalty
- If on a particular day you don't drive or the cameras don't detect you driving, you will not be charged (whereas if you pay-as-you-go, you might think you've driven in the ULEZ and pay voluntarily, but in fact may not have been detected.)
Auto Pay is free to set up, for any address (not just in London). You just need to add your vehicles, and add a card or direct debit.
If you have friends and family outside Greater London who may visit from time to time, please tell them about Auto Pay too. Even the BBC's helpful FAQ about ULEZ doesn't mention Auto Pay:
