Dear Members,

Here's a brief update, with news and information:

Events in the Park

The organisers of the Ghana and Mauritius festivals have sent EBRA some provisional but very detailed plans for their events in Oak Hill Park on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July.

Some points to mention are: They will fence off the festival area; entry will be controlled by security personnel who may search / scan visitors. A sergeant and 8 constables from the Met Police should be in attendance. A drone will be piloted over the park for video surveillance. An A&E ambulance and medical team will attend. Coggers Funfair will be open both days to 8pm.

Something that has not been seen before is their intention to use a grassy area for 100 cars to pay to park:

Some of the details I've been able to extract are:

The Ghana Party In The Park is on Sat 13th July, and will run from midday to 9pm.

The Mauritius Open Air Festival is on Sun 14th July, and will run from midday to 8pm.

From 12 noon to 4 pm, there will be warm-up performances, corporate messages and giveaways. The main live acts and performances occur from 4 pm to 7.45 pm.

Bars will stop serving 30 minutes before the end of the event.

They recommend visitors walk from Southgate tube station, Oakleigh Park train station, or get the 184 / 382 bus or free shuttle from Arnos Grove.

Visitors who have bought one of the 100 car park tickets in advance will not be allowed to turn right from Church Hill Road into the grass car park. They will have to turn round at the Village and come back to turn left into the car park.

They say "Since the event has a wide appeal, we expect most of the visitors will be travelling into the area. Based on previous years the Travel Mode Share is:

  • Public Transport: 40%
  • Taxi: 15%
  • Shuttle Service: 20%
  • Personal Vehicles: 20%
  • On foot: 5%"
So if they do sell 5,000 tickets for each event, and 20% arrive in personal vehicles... That's potentially 1,000 people in maybe 400 vehicles?

They say "All road closures will be manned by at least 1 traffic operative at all times the road closure is in place. Vehicles requiring access to their relevant residences will be advised to carry a copy of the Borough of Barnet Council Event Notification letter. Residents will also be advised to use a key word or provide proof of address when entering their road by car."

The organisers have agreed to discuss their plans with residents at a public meeting which I am organising at St Mary's Church. More details to follow.

Council Consultations - Sorry!

I would like to apologise for wasting everyone's time by encouraging you to participate in 'Engage Barnet' consultations.

It's now very clear that consultations are completely ignored, and are only used as a cynical 'box-ticking' ploy.

The recent one about the proposed 38% increase in the charge for emptying a green garden waste bin, showed that 93% of residents who responded objected to such a large increase.

Yet without any further explanation or justification, Alan Schneiderman (Cabinet Member for Environment & Climate Change) exercised his delegated powers to approve the charge.

The outcome of the consultation was not even posted in Engage Barnet, but EB councillor Simon Radford helpfully provided this link to the decision report.

Someone on Facebook posted an alternative slogan for the Engage Barnet website:

I tend to agree, and will not bother to publicise any further "consultations".
