Dear Guest, here are some updates and information - quite a few subjects have cropped up in the past fortnight:

Gasworks - Again!

How many times has "Gasworks" been featured in our newsletters? Well, they're back again. Not content with the approved plans for 371 homes on the site, the developers are yet again hoping to increase their profits by squeezing in more than 100 additional flats. The result would be some substandard, noisy and hot flats which the developers concede will need air conditioning to avoid overheating.

Here's the Save New Barnet team's news bulletin with info about their public meeting on 11th October.

You can view and comment on the plans on Barnet Council's website here: 23/3964/FUL

Church Farm Houses - Revised Plan

The plans to build eight houses on the site of the old Church Farm swimming pool were approved in April. But due to the geometry of the site, the house furthest down Burlington Rise ("house 8") was a difficult shape (top diagram):

So the developers have worked with the school to agree a small "land-swap" to improve that house 8 with a more regular shape, and a parking space which it wouldn't have had before (lower diagram). In return, the developers will build a new shed / workshop for the school.
Negotiations between the developers, the Council, and the Department for Education have taken some time. East Barnet Councillor Simon Radford helped with the negotiations, and as he said at our meeting last week, developers are often given a hard time (sometimes quite rightly) but for the record these developers have been much more transparent, and much more proactive reaching out to councillors and residents.
You can view the revised plans on the Council's website.

Mental Health Day

Adam Wilson, Barnet Friends Coordinator writes:
The next Hub Connections Event for World Mental Health Day will be taking place on Tuesday 10th October, 11am-3pm at The Meritage Centre, Church, End, Hendon, London, NW4 4JT

Advertising & EV Charging Point in the Village

There is an application for another of these monstrosities outside Brooks Funerals in Church Hill Road in the Village.

These applications are being approved all across the borough despite well-reasoned and articulated objections, because they have in effect already been agreed by the Council when they negotiated the contract with Jolt.

(this is an Australian version of an advertising display/charger. Jolt seem a bit reluctant to show photos of the slightly modified UK version)

The panels are over 8ft 6in tall by nearly 4ft wide, and each video display consumes over a kilowatt of electricity continuously. The Council claim the advertising is necessary to subsidise the cost of charging vehicles.

If you wish to comment on this planning application, you can find it at 23/3973/FUL on the Council's website.

Hornets vs Bees

Dear Friends of Parks

Please be aware Asian hornet nests are on the increase (currently 54 nests discovered in Britain this year). Asian Hornet behaviour predates on honey bees and native pollinators. There is also a danger for residents accidently finding a founder nest at low level. Asian hornet is not yet established in the UK the more people that can get involved the better to protect green spaces and wildlife!

The Enfield Beekeepers are co-ordinating efforts to spread awareness and encourage trapping of Asian Hornets (so that a nest can be located by a inspector)

Please:

National Bee Unit

British Bee Keepers Association

Thank you for any support you can provide.

Kind regards, James Waterton - Enfield Beekeepers Association

Gladrags Secret Society

EBRA member Sue Goldstein suggested I include this - "it's such good fun for Seniors - singing, dancing, dressing up, with a drink or two and lots of nibbles - plus photos. The music is great and loads of youngsters organising and joining in with us Seniors and all free. Of course it's the Gladrags Secret Society - it's so secret that it has to be shared!!"
