Wednesday 1st November 2023

Dear Guest, here are some updates and information:

NLBP Appeal

We have just heard that Comer Homes have appealed against Barnet Council's refusal of their planning application to almost double the size of the development from 1,350 to 2,419 homes.

This appeal will be heard and decided by a Planning Inspector appointed by the Government, not by Barnet Council, in a public hearing which is scheduled for 13th February 2024. The Inspector will see all the previously submitted objections to the planning application, and may hear submissions from interested parties.

Residents would probably like to organise and make representations to the Inspector's hearing, and this is possible under a mechanism known as "Rule 6". However, we have nobody to organise and lead this, and therefore any resident prepared to take on this challenge must please stand up and be counted NOW...

Please reply ASAP if you can help.

Floods Help

East Barnet councillor Simon Radford forwards this timely information from Barnet Council:

"Please see attached an information sheet on how we deal with flooding of the public network, including:

  • Reporting flooding
  • Who is responsible depending on the cause and their contacts for reporting
  • Our Local Flood Risk Strategy

Further in-depth information can be found here: Flood and Water Management

Gasworks - Reminder

Our MP, Theresa Villiers urges all residents to object to the proposed changes to the approved plan to build homes on the site of the New Barnet gasworks.

You can read her message here

The Save New Barnet team's latest newsletter is here.

Although a planning application is not a referendum, the numbers of residents objecting or supporting the plans are often mentioned during planning meetings and appeals. We have noticed that it appears the developers may somehow have persuaded a few residents to put their names against comments in favour of the scheme, so it is important to get as many objections recorded as possible. The deadline is this Friday 3rd November.

Community Skips

East Barnet councillor Edith David posted on our Facebook group a link to the Council's community skip service :
barnet.gov.uk/communityskips

However, there is no list of skips available there - instead you have remember to visit the website from time to time and put in your postcode and address to discover if one might be available somewhere near you soon.

I've asked for a list of forthcoming skip dates and locations, but the Council has refused because it seems they don't want too many people to use them. (As opposed to driving to Summers Lane in their ULEZ compliant vehicles, presumably!)

So I've looked up a few local addresses for you and found these:
  • 22-NOV-2023 on Northfield Road, EN4 9HT
    Junction of Somercoates Close
  • 06-DEC-2023 on Gallants Farm Road, EN4 8ES
    Junction of Derwent Avenue
If you think the Council's attitude is unreasonable, please let Edith know on cllr.e.david@barnet.gov.uk

Please let me know if you'd like me to remember to look up skip dates for you.

Oak Hill Park Car Park ASB

For years we have been asking the Council, the Police, and Community Safety teams to do something about the boy racer 'meets' which frequently happen in the car park, causing great distress to local residents.

Mat Gunyon from Barnet Council writes:

"I can update that the team have received quotations for the required work to the car park entrance. The proposed works will involve the removal of two parking bays (left of the entrance) in order to allow for a wide two way entrance/exit to be constructed. In the evenings the entry side will be locked by a gate and the exit side will have the access control teeth installed.
This approach will mean anyone in the car park will be able to exit safely but no additional vehicles will be able to enter the car park.
The costings are being prepared for a planned bid to the North Area Committee in January to fund the scheme. Assuming funding is approved at the committee the works will be programmed to complete as soon as possible.
Matthew Gunyon, Head of Greenspaces, London Borough of Barnet"

Furthermore, East Barnet councillor Simon Radford writes:
"I can confirm that I have submitted an application to fund this at the next area committee."

Danegrove School Governors Needed

Emily Armer, chair of Danegrove School governors writes:

"Danegrove Primary School is seeking enthusiastic and committed community governors to join our governing board.

Danegrove is a vibrant and friendly, mainstream primary school of 630 pupils in the heart of East Barnet. Whilst we are hoping to find volunteers with some experience of governance, we would welcome applications from anyone with a genuine interest and willingness to learn and contribute.

School governance is a great way for volunteers to make a worthwhile contribution to their local community. Our full governing board meets approximately 5 times a year with additional sub-committee meetings taking place each term. All meetings tend to be on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00.

We are a friendly group united in our aim to support our school in offering all our pupils a great start in their journey through education.

Please find the school's website here

If you are interested and wish to to learn more, please contact Emily, chair of governors, on earmer.302@lgflmail.org"
