Sunday 11th February 2024

Dear Members, here are some updates, news and information, and it seems to be survey time:

Incredible Edible Barnet Seed Swap

EBRA committee member Wendy Alcock writes:

The next seed swap event is on Sunday 3rd March 2-4pm at St John's URC church, New Barnet, EN5 1RH

Almshouses Vacancies

I've been contacted by the Clerk to the Trustees of The Lancelot Hasluck Trust, an Almshouse Trust based in Parkside Gardens.

She says "We have three properties becoming available in the near future for Barnet residents who can apply to become beneficiaries of the Trust."

"To be eligible for consideration the main requirements are:

  • to be over the age of 55 years;
  • show a need for housing;
  • limited financial means;
  • have lived in Barnet for a good period of time - preference is given to those from East Barnet, New Barnet, Friern Barnet and High Barnet;
  • and to be able to live independently.

More information and an application form can be found on our websiteWe would welcome enquiries from those in need who can satisfy the above. There’s no cut-off date. The more people who apply, the better! The properties won’t be ready for a couple of months but obviously we like to interview the applicants beforehand, particularly as they would probably have to give notice to their current provider."

Community Action Panel

EBRA member Jennifer Grocock writes:

"Wearing my hat as Chairman of the East Barnet Ward CAP (Community Action Panel) I would be grateful if you could add in our invite for the next meeting please. The more, the merrier!

I am delighted to invite residents and businesses connected to East Barnet Ward to the next Ward CAP (Community Action Panel) meeting.

Date: Friday 23rd February 2024 Time: 6.30pm

Venue: Methodist Church, East Barnet Village.

We welcome new members.

Please email me: jagrocock@live.com for further details and to enable the pre-meeting paperwork to be circulated."

The Week Ahead

Wearing her other hat, as a councillor for Finchley Church End ward, Jennifer Grocock forwarded an email which is sent to all councillors across Greater Barnet, called "The Week Ahead". It's a bit long, and I don't really have the time to pick out and feature all the nuggets of interest to EBRA members, and several of them I've already covered in previous newsletters. So I've attached it to this newsletter as a PDF for you to read.

There are mentions of "Resident engagement to inform the future delivery of EV charge points across the borough (opens later today, 9th)" and "Garden waste consultation" but neither of those is actually open yet on engage.Barnet...

Please let me know if you think it would be useful to include these bulletins with future EBRA newsletters. Thank you.

Barnet Question Time

Put your questions to the Leader of Barnet Council and Cabinet Members at 7pm on Monday 4th March.

The third Barnet Question Time is a live online event where you’ll get the chance to put your questions to the Leader of the Council, Cllr Barry Rawlings, and his Cabinet.

This is your opportunity to ask a question or simply tell them what you think about the borough and how they can improve.

You can book your place now for Barnet Question Time and they will send you a joining link closer to the day of the event.

Water Smart - Save Our Streams

Affinity Water write:

We've launched a school programme across the Affinity Water region as part of our water-saving mission. We're working with educational specialists, We Are Futures and the National Schools Partnership to provide primary schools with water-saving education materials. This will help pupils understand the importance of saving water and inspire them to make everyday changes to leave more in the local environment.

We will:

  • Help pupils learn more about saving water and how everyone can play a part in protecting our chalk streams.
  • Equip teachers with complete toolkits to use in lessons and assemblies to educate children on why it’s important to save water.
  • Host an exciting poster competition where schools could win a water-saving garden up to the value of £5,000, with runners up receiving £500 for their water-saving efforts.
  • Inspire pupils to think of new ways to save water by providing every participating school with a free water butt.

Teachers can sign their school up, and you can also download the Take-Home pack from our education toolkit for yourself from our website here

Edward Road Closed for 3 weeks

EB councillor Phil Cohen sent the above notice, so I made a map and posted it on Facebook. A resident complained that the road is already closed - but that's probably because the sewer had collapsed. But at least we now have an idea why it's closed, and when it should reopen...

Prince of Wales - ACV Update

The hearing - after which the Leader of the Council will decide whether or not to grant Asset of Community Value status to the Prince of Wales - will be on Monday 26th February. This is not a public meeting, it's a video call with the Leader and council officers, EB councillors, and the nominating group EBRA (me). The owners have also been invited. I'll let you know the outcome.

Bodens Update

Back in January 2021 we reported that a member had spotted that Boden's lease was up for sale.

Then in May 2023 we reported that there was a planning application for Lyonsdown Church to use it as a place of worship. Barnet Council decided that this would be a lawful change of use.

Now the Lyonsdown Church Partnership has lodged a planning application [24/0432/FUL] for "Demolition of existing building and rear industrial units and construction of new two storey building to form church hall". Comments (whether in support or against) can be made on the Council's planning portal [link here]

AGM Date

A reminder that our AGM will be held on Wednesday 28th February 2024. We shall again be meeting in the new community halls attached to St Mary's Church. Meetings start promptly at 7:30pm; members are welcome to arrive from 7:15pm. We have invited our six ward councillors to attend (3 for Brunswick Park and 3 for East Barnet) but we understad that some may have council meetings.

The proposed agenda is taking shape:

  • East Barnet Village car park - status of the fly-tipped vehicles and introduction of parking charges to prevent over-staying;
  • Oak Hill Park car park - status of the planned entry / exit installation;
  • Oak Hill Park playground - status of the proposed improvements / additions to the existing equipment;
  • Commercial events in Oak Hill Park;
  • NLBP - feedback on the planning inquiry;
  • Prince of Wales - feedback on ACV nomination

Please let me know if you have any other items to include. Thank you.

Best regards,

Rob White
